Scott Kelby. The Adobe Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers. January 2009. 1 edition

ARE YOU READY FOR AN AMAZING NEW VERSION OF THE PHOTOSHOP BOOK THAT BREAKS ALL THE RULES?

Scott Kelby, the best-selling Photoshop author in the world today, once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers the latest, most important, and most exciting new Adobe Photoshop CS4 techniques for digital photographers. This major update to his award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that’s never been done before—it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step-by-step the exact techniques used by today’s cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why. That’s why the previous editions of this book are widely used as the official study guide in photography courses at colleges and universities around the world.

LEARN HOW THE PROS DO IT

Each year Scott trains thousands of professional photographers how to use Photoshop, and almost without exception they have the same questions, the same problems, and the same challenges—and that’s exactly what he covers in this book. You’ll learn:

  • The sharpening techniques the pros really use.

  • The pros’ tricks for fixing the most common digital photo problems fast!

  • The step-by-step setup for getting what comes out of your printer to match exactly what you see onscreen.

  • A whole chapter on how to process HDR (High Dynamic Range) images.

  • How to master new CS4 interface and workflow features.

  • How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat.

  • How to process RAW digital camera images (plus how to take advantage of all the new Camera Raw features in CS4!).

  • How to add real automation to your work.

  • How to show your work like a pro!

  • A host of shortcuts, workarounds, and slick “insider” tricks to send your productivity through the roof!

Plus, Scott included a special bonus chapter with his own CS4 workflow, from start to finish. If you’re a digital photographer, and you’re ready to learn the “tricks of the trade”—the same ones that today’s leading pros use to correct, edit, sharpen, retouch, and present their work—then you’re holding the book that will do just that.

But then a blogger (Ashley Schultz) made some serious allegations against Adobe based on the app's pricing structure and behavior. I reached out to Adobe to get more information on the allegations made in the complaint, and was told they are completely inaccurate and that they have thoroughly investigated the allegations made in the complaint. I also reached out to Schultz who told me she is looking into the matter. The complaint, which is online and can be viewed here, states that FontSpy Dynamic Pro 1.0 is intended for "Web application developers pricing range who wish to monitor and analyze their sales and use data." Data that was indeed part of the complaint. The complaint goes on to say that during the course of its initial public offering, the app was suspended "for over a week" by the app's developer due to an "increased rate of copyright infringement, trademark and patent infringement, server irregularities and unauthorized modifications" but that the developer returned with a new version in May. The new version of the app was relatively safer and was able to recover the content that was traded or moved. It did, however, detect a large amount of unauthorized content being traded and transferred. "The presence of these indicators has resulted in the app being placed on watch list alert," the complaint reads. "This version of FontSpy Pro has been testing and will be reviewed by the state of Connecticut. Currently the premium version is in the beta phase and would detect and begin to detect banned or blocked content, as well as websites that are likely to be visited by the watch list. "The premium version also allows you to create and upload your own fonts, upload your activity data, and close the trade or transfer transaction when notified that there is no longer a trademarked content in the system." The complaint goes on to say that Adobe responded that the measures taken due attention and they have been contacted by our independent lab, who is a top five company in the U.S., on the takedown of a single server in March. The lawsuit was originally filed in federal court in Connecticut but was dismissed on Wednesday with an order of the lab. The Fonts with the highest scores on Bittorrent websites are auctioned off to the highest bidder. Without knowing the identity of the winning bidder, the Font Lab, the rightful owners of the server data, has filed a complaint with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) against the person or entity who is determined to have purchased it. According to the complaint, Font Data is Competitive Price (or FiP) to Media Cloud Alliance for an enterprise font called Design Free Type. Anyone with the font can download it
